The Acting Program offers comprehensive training in stage and screen acting for the students interested in a performance career. Acting Majors take classes that include acting (Meisner, Stanislavski Techniques), voice and articulation, period acting, improvisation, makeup, directing, acting for the camera, stage combat, dialects and theater history.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Graduating seniors will present a Senior Showcase for casting directors, agents, and managers from across the U.S.

By the time they reach graduation, students will have developed the skills, techniques, and professional materials needed to compete in the industry. Their training culminates in key experiences such as a professional headshot session and a trip to Chicago, where students participate in masterclasses and attend performances at renowned theatres including Steppenwolf, the Goodman, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

Acting (BFA)

This major is administered by the area of Theatre in the School of Performing Arts and consists of 80 credits. Choose this option if you wish to pursue intensive training in acting in order to become a theatre professional.

In addition, we offer two liberal arts degrees: the BA Dance major and minor, with coursework in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and theoretical studies, and the BA Drama major, which allows students to study multiple focused areas such as playwriting, dramaturgy, directing, design, and acting. In addition, UW-Stevens Point has joined with Balanced Body Pilates to become an authorized training center, and offers the most well-known and innovative Pilates Teacher Training curriculum internationally, giving our students the tools required to begin a successful career as Pilates professionals. The integrated study of dance and Pilates provides additional learning opportunities that are stimulating, personal and rooted in the art and science of movement.

UW-Stevens Point dance faculty work with students to re-evaluate technique and explore new approaches to training at a high level. This re-evaluation includes training with optimal anatomical alignment that supports injury-free dancing. Students also develop the ability to work as a part of an ensemble, the ability to work openly and honestly with other dancers, the ability to be flexible in the artistic process with choreographers, directors, rehearsal assistants, and the ability to collaborate successfully with other artists and technicians.

dance major

Dance majors take a minimum of 48 credits to graduate. We recommend that if you are interested in continuing your dance technique studies, you should take two core classes per semester and participate in summer dance workshops. You are also required to register for a practicum each of your first six semesters as a major. Practicum areas are scene shop, costume shop, deck run crew, costume run crew, house/public relations, design, directing/choreography/management, and performance. You may repeat an area after you have completed 6 different activities. This program is administered by the area of Dance in the School of Performing Arts.

DANCE MINOR

UWSP also offers a Dance Minor, consisting of 27 credits. This minor is administered by the area of Dance in the School of Performing Arts.

Drama

DEFINE AND FOCUS YOUR INTEREST

The drama program allows students the opportunity to take classes in many areas of the department and pursue an education that enables them to pursue their interests as they progress through the degree. With only 41-49 credits required to earn a BA in Drama, students are able to add a second major or multiple minors. The BA in Drama is not a performance-focused degree.

Jazz Studies

LEARN TO GIVE YOUR MUSIC SOUL

Jazz studies students train in music research and music development. Students develop fundamental research skills through transcription and performance of seminal and contemporary jazz works. The application of these principles to the creation of new music, informed by life experiences and aesthetic values, is crucial to students’ development as artists. Composition and improvisation are at the heart of the jazz studies curriculum.

Students in the Jazz Studies program build essential research skills through transcription and performance of both landmark and contemporary jazz repertoire. With a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio, the program ensures individualized instruction and meaningful mentorship.

PURSUE YOUR PASSION IN MUSIC

The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree provides a solid core of music study including music theory/musicianship, jazz studies, applied performance study, and large ensemble participation in state-of-the-art facilities. Electives are available for the curious!

WHY STUDY MUSIC AT UW-STEVENS POINT?

Students in music majors benefit from performing the classics of their literature. Recent performances include Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring,” numerous works for Wind Band or Wind Ensemble by Frank Ticheli (with the composer on the podium in a guest residency), Beethoven’s “9th Symphony,” Brahm’s “German Requiem” and many others.

UW-Stevens Point’s music program has every student take a course in music composition. Many students continue composition studies and activities even when they had no previous composition experience.

Music Education

BEGIN YOUR MUSIC TEACHING CAREER HERE!

The music education program is an undergraduate program that focuses on the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to teach music to students, K-12. UW-Stevens Point offers Wisconsin teacher certification in music education – choral, music education – general and music education – instrumental.

Successful candidates in the program earn a Bachelor of Music degree and a Wisconsin teaching license in one or more of the music education certification areas. Full admission to this program is through an application and interview process normally completed during a student’s sophomore year.

UW-Stevens Point graduates in the School of Education typically have some of the highest career outcome rates in full-time teaching jobs within their first year after graduation in the UW System. Students who achieve a Wisconsin license for teaching music have unlimited career opportunities across the United States. Recent graduates of the program are teaching music in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada. Whether students wish to stay in Wisconsin or experience another area, a degree in music education offers the opportunity.

Student teaching is the culminating experience in the teacher candidate’s academic program of study at UW-Stevens Point. It provides an opportunity for teacher candidates to practice and refine their knowledge and skills under the supervision and guidance of cooperating teachers and our own faculty who have dedicated their careers to education and a lifetime of student learning. Students also have the opportunity to perform in:

This 89 credit major is administered by the area of Music in the School of Performing Arts.

Teacher Certification: K-12 Music

Admission to the Department of Music as an undergraduate music major or minor is by audition. You must complete the music theory diagnostic test, and if you wish to major in music, you must be evaluated by piano faculty for placement.

Music Performance

MASTER YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS

The music performance major offers University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students intensive training with a world-class faculty in state-of-the-art facilities. The program offers a solid core of music study including music theory/musicianship, music history and literature, applied performance study and large-ensemble participation.

WHY STUDY MUSIC PERFORMANCE AT UW-STEVENS POINT?

Students in the music majors benefit from performing the classics of their literature. Recent performances include Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring,” numerous works for Wind Band or Wind Ensemble by Frank Ticheli (with the composer on the podium in a guest residencly), Beethoven’s “9th Symphony,” Brahm’s “German Requiem” and many others.
 
UW-Stevens Point’s music program has every student take a course in music compostion. Many students continue composition studies and activities even when they had no previous composition experience.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE (bm) INSTRUMENTAL OPTION

This minimum 78 credit major is administered by the area of Music in the School of Performing Arts. Admission to the Department of Music as an undergraduate music major or minor is by audition only. Your performance proficiency will be reviewed at the end of your first year for permission to continue. In your first semester, with your applied teacher’s approval, you may audition to enter the performance degree program in the second semester of that year. All majors must present a half recital in your junior year in your major instrument and give a senior recital.

music performance (bm) jazz studies option

This minimum 78 credit major is administered by the area of Music in the School of Performing Arts. Admission to the Department of Music as an undergraduate music major or minor is by audition only. Non-piano majors must complete level 100 in piano. Woodwind majors must demonstrate proficiency on two secondary instruments. Your performance proficiency will be reviewed at the end of your first year for permission to continue. In your first semester, with your applied teacher’s approval, you may audition to enter the performance degree program in the second semester of that year. All majors must present a junior half recital and a senior recital.

music performance (bm) piano option

This minimum 78 credit major is administered by the area of Music in the School of Performing Arts. Admission to the Department of Music as an undergraduate music major or minor is by audition only. Your performance proficiency will be reviewed at the end of your first year for permission to continue. In your first semester, with your applied teacher’s approval, you may audition to enter the performance degree program in the second semester of that year. Theatre Design and Technology

HANDS-ON IMMERSION BEHIND THE SCENES 

The theatre design and technology program offers its students a variety of disciplines and venues. The core requirements offer a broad range while the elective options permit focused, in-depth training in particular areas. Courses are offered in all levels of scenic, lighting, costume, makeup, sound and properties design.

UW-Stevens Point offers an active production schedule that affords design/tech students ample opportunities to assist and lead design both mainstage and studio productions as well as dance performances. Design and Technology opportunities include: dance performances, contemporary theatre productions, classical theatre productions, Player’s student group performances and Master Classes with visiting artists.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The department prides itself in striking a balance between academic and production work. Both areas are vitally important. We believe in student learning through active participation in theatrical productions. Design and technical majors typically have a production assignment every semester during their tenure in our department. Beginning responsibilities usually start with smaller shows and/or assistant positions. Summer internships opportunities include repertory theatres, summer theatre festivals, and theme parks.

Upon graduating, our students find career placement in positions including:

Theatre Design and Technology (BFA)

This major consists of 78 credits and is administered by the area of Theatre in the School of Performing Arts. Choose this option if you wish to pursue intensive training in design/technology in order to become a theatre professional.

Admission to all Theatre and Dance programs (with the exception of Arts, Entertainment and Media Management) is by audition/interview only. UW-Stevens Point offers five theatre and dance degree tracks, including three highly competitive conservatory-styled BFA programs in Musical Theatre, Acting, and Design and Technology. In addition, we offer two liberal arts degrees: the BA Dance major and minor, with coursework in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and theoretical studies, and the BA Drama major, which allows students to study multiple focused areas such as playwriting, dramaturgy, directing, design, and acting. These excellent academic and production programs have established UW-Stevens Point as a primary undergraduate center in Wisconsin for students interested in the performing arts.
