Starting in June, the Sedge Meadow Trail boardwalk that leads to Lake Joanis (on the east side of Michigan Avenue) will be CLOSED for replacement.
The current boardwalk is narrow and has an uneven surface in some places, reducing accessibility for people in wheelchairs, people pushing strollers, and people with other mobility disabilities. Starting in June, our intrepid volunteer trail crew will be removing the old boardwalk and constructing a new elevated 8-foot-wide walkway with a level surface. The project will likely take about 2 months. A detour will be posted during construction for visitors wanting to access the lake.
This project is being funded through a generous donation by the Worth Family, in memory of Bob Worth. This gift was made to enhance accessibility of the lake area in Schmeeckle, which also included the resurfacing of the Lake Loop in 2021 and the construction of the fishing pier in 2022.
