Our Mission, Vision and Values

Our Mission
… is to provide a community in which we inspire, create, and achieve. This community is centered on our students, who come first in our decision-making process.

The College of Fine Arts and Communication is celebrating more than 50 years of Artistic/Academic Excellence on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus. It holds the distinction of being the only university in the state that has earned and maintained national accreditation in all four arts disciplines: Art and Design (NASAD and CIDA), Dance (NASD), Music (NASM), and Theatre (NAST). Graduates from all fine arts and communication programs find successful careers, ranging from local and regional studio work, non-profit organizations, businesses, and educational institutions, to national media organizations, graduate programs, and performance stages from coast-to-coast. At the core of every COFAC academic program and key to alumni success is a high level of personal attention combined with practical, hands-on learning experiences. Our faculty are experienced professionals who are devoted to mentoring students in their areas of interest and helping them take the next step into careers in professional creative fields.

Professor Gambrell has always been very helpful during our studio time and always helps when it’s needed. He will help check our angles if we are sighting and measuring and gives his thoughts on how well our colors match. He looks out for his students and gives us many opportunities to succeed, whether it’s helping us with our projects in class, or if it’s inviting us to put our work in an art exhibition in the Schneider Student Gallery.
Major: Fine Arts (BFA)

Shannon Ortner ’28

The studio environment is perfect for getting work done comfortably. Each student has their space while having easy access to collaboration. We are able to hone our technical skills, namely color mixing, blending, and composition.
Major: Interior Architecture

Aubrey Schmidt ’25

Beyond studios, I take courses that give a new perspective and inform future designs. The sustainability perspective and natural resources component is a particular focus, as well as the influence of social spheres. I am also very involved with professional development opportunities as there are many student organizations around campus.

Our Students and Alumni

Most students who enroll in the COFAC are driven by a passion to learn and grow in an area of special interest. During their time on campus, their varied academic and hands-on experiences open new doors to potential career paths, leading them to discover their purpose. Our students receive a comprehensive education, one that fully embraces a strong general education foundation, encompassing a broad exposure to multiple disciplines—from foundational skills in oral and written communication, critical thinking, quantitative literacy, to studies in human cultures and sciences, to social and environmental responsibility. Beyond a general education, our students select from a wide variety of liberal arts and professional degree programs for more in-depth study in specialized areas of interest and high-level multidisciplinary collaborations. Our proactive approach to new program development, through consultation with professional contacts and organizations, helps us to anticipate future workplace challenges and trends, invest in technological advances, and adapt hands-on experiences that best prepare students for careers and/or graduate studies. Graduates from the COFAC are well-prepared to enter the professional world. Through their coursework and hands-on learning experiences our students develop life-long skills that readily transfer to ever-changing workplace needs—adaptability, collaboration, communication/presentation, sensitivity, empathy, and creativity. The faculty strongly encourage risk-taking, with a focus on critical thinking and the creative process to overcome challenges and to develop confidence through enhanced problem-solving and communication skills.
