Starting with one cabinet of about 1,000 plant specimens in 1969, Dr. Robert Freckmann, working with Dr. Frank W. Bowers, built the UW-Stevens Point based herbarium into the second largest in Wisconsin, with more than 200,000 specimens.
The collection of virtual flora of Wisconsin generates over 20,000,000 hits per year online. It contains information on each of the more than 2600 vascular plant species that occurs in Wisconsin, including photos, distribution maps, specimen records, and more!

Our mission is to document the occurrence of plants in Wisconsin, focusing on Central Wisconsin (Marathon, Portage, and Wood Counties).
Get involved in our statewide plant inventory. We train volunteers to document and mount specimens in our ever-growing collection. Interested in learning more? Please reach out to our curator, Associate Professor Stephanie Lyon.
slyon@uwsp.eduOther research emphases are aquatic vascular plants, grasses, bryophytes, and lichens.
