Prescribed Fire for Forest Management Series

Fire and Turkeys

Apr. 2, 2025 | 10:30 A.M.-Noon CT

Michael Chamberlain, Ph.D., will present “Influences of Prescribed Fires on the Ecology of Wild Turkeys.” He will cover some basic background information about wild turkeys, delve into why prescribed fires can be beneficial to turkeys, and outline the research he’s conducted on wild turkeys across a number of sites in the southeast managed with prescribed fire. Dr. Chamberlain will also present work conducted predicting the most appropriate scale of fire commensurate with management of landscapes for wild turkeys.

Marcus Lashley, Ph.D., Associate Professor, UF D.E.E.R. Lab, Department of Wildlife Ecology & Conservation, University of Florida will dive even deeper into the important role prescribed fire plays in turkey habitat.

This session will be moderated by Tommy Gunn, Great Lakes Oak Ecosystem Forester, American Bird Conservancy.
