Project Overview

The Forest Management for Wildlife Habitat Demonstration Sites are designed to provide foresters, natural resource professionals, landowners, and the public with the knowledge and skills to execute forest management with an emphasis on wildlife habitat.

The demo sites cover several ecosystems. Many are located in central Wisconsin while others are in the west-central and northeastern parts of the state. They showcase several types of harvest methods. Management practices that can be applied to small parcels and commercially on large forest tracts have been integrated. They illustrate prescribed forest management techniques, including timber marking, harvest systems, regrowth, and wildlife response.

This project is coordinated by Mike Demchik, professor of silviculture at UW-Stevens Point.

Additional Resources

The Wisconsin Forestry Center offers professional development workshops and a certificate program that cover a range of topics in forest management for wildlife. The goal is to provide an overview of forest habitat requirements for key wildlife species including white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, neotropical migrant birds, and connect them to sustainable forest management practices.
