Department of Geography and Geology

Building Solutions for Tomorrow

Represent the world around us and plan for a sustainable future. Students gain practical experience with the latest applications and techniques in geographic information systems, environmental science, community sustainability, and physical and cultural geography.

Program Facilities

UWSP students have access to state-of-the-art computer equipment for the facilitation of map production and geographic analyses. Our students are trained in the field with weather and climate studies, submeter GPS data collection, large scale urban mapping, and much more!

Research Projects

GIS Center faculty and staff engage in research opportunities that help enrich the GIS curriculum and provides solutions to challenging spatial problems. GIS Center research also provides our students with life experiences only obtained by working on real-world problems first-hand.

Center for the Small City

The Center for the Small City focuses on small cities, towns, and rural areas within micropolitan areas, (settlements with fewer than 50,000 people.) CSC sponsors a biennial national conference that brings academics, small city elected officials and staff together to discuss the development, needs, and problems affecting small cities.

Collaborate with Us!

The GIS Center conducts Geographic Information Systems training, outreach, and research. Our community outreach and research help Wisconsin citizens and communities confront various types of geospatial challenges.

News of Note

A Sustainable Career Option

The community sustainability curriculum, developed over several years with faculty teaching diverse disciplines, takes a complementary approach, with core coursework in urban planning, policy, environmental history, climate change and ethics. Majors will study across multiple systems to learn about the ethical, social and economic considerations around sustainable community development.
