Climate Change Help Desk?

Season 2 | Episode 10 | November 15, 2021

When it comes to climate change, we all have questions. As foresters some of our most fundamental climate change questions deal with how trees will respond. What species are projected to do well or not so well? What species will find new habitat where I work? How do I make informed management decisions in the face of change? On this episode of SilviCast, we dig into one tool that helps with these and other questions, The Climate Change Tree Atlas. Our guests this episode, Louis Iverson, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station (retired), and Stephen Handler, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station, Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), walk through The Climate Change Tree Atlas and discuss how we can use it to make better management decisions.

Stephen Handler

Climate Change Specialist, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station

Stephen Handler is a climate change specialist with the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. His main role with NIACS is to coordinate the Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework, which involves building partnerships, assessing climate change risk, and working with forest managers and landowners to adapt and prepare for future change. Stephen moved to Houghton, MI, in 2011 and loves being a Yooper.

Louis Iverson

Retired Research Landscape Ecologist, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station

Louis Iverson is a retired research landscape ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station in Delaware, OH, and adjunct professor with the School of Natural Resources at the Ohio State University. His research interests include understanding the potential tree species impacts from drought and climate change (especially associated with the Climate Change Atlas), and using prescribed fire and thinning in restoring oak communities.
