Is This a Deer Thing?

When it comes to regenerating forests in the eastern United States, most foresters know that deer browse will often be part of the equation. But assessing the severity of browse and ultimately its impact on successful recruitment of trees is not always easy. We continue our conversation with Dustin Bronson, a Research Plant Physiologist with the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station, and Casey Menick, Forest Regeneration Program Specialist with Wisconsin DNR, Division of Forestry to learn how good regeneration monitoring can help us answer some of these challenging questions.

Dustin Bronson

Plant Physiologist, U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station

Dustin Bronson is a plant physiologist with the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station in Rhinelander, WI. Dustin received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in forest ecology and went on to conduct post-doctoral research at the University of Wyoming and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a research scientist with the Wisconsin DNR for seven years before joining the Forest Service. Outside of work, Dustin and his family run a small farm that specializes in raising grass-fed beef, pasture-raised hogs, and chickens.

Casey Menick

Forest Regeneration Specialist, Wisconsin DNR

Casey has been with the Wisconsin DNR as a Forest Regeneration Specialist since 2018. She works to coordinate plot measurements and data management for the newly developed statewide forest regeneration monitoring inventory. Previous to her time with the DNR, she was with the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center and graduated from UW-Madison with degrees in biology and environmental studies in 2014. She is interested in landscape ecology and long-term environmental research.
