Arboretum
This 99-acre natural forest is a rare and valuable remnant of the vegetation that once covered Central Wisconsin. European settlement during the last two centuries removed and disrupted native habitats, subsisting agricultural crops from Europe (alfalfa, clover, oats) and Central America (corn).
Historical records, dating back from 1866, reveal land adjacent to the forest was sold for agricultural use. Apparently the forest was located between land sold for farming and escaped some of the ravages of agricultural use. In the 1950s, schoolhouse actually existed near the northwest corner of the arboretum. In 1963 the City of Marshfield annexed a parcel of land, which included the original 20-acre forest, for the UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield.
For more than four decades, under the protection of the University of Wisconsin, this forest has continued its natural development and served as an educational and recreational resource. Realizing that natural area such as this are rare in and around Marshfield and should be conserved at all possible costs, we ask that you remember that all trees, shrubs and flowers are totally protected.
Facilities
Theatre
The Helen C. Laird Theatre is a 340-seat thrust stage theatre. It is fully equipped with a 48-dimmer, computerized stage-lighting system and a professional sound system, including CD, tape and mini-disk capabilities. In addition, videotape, DVD and PowerPoint equipment is available. The backstage area includes two dressing rooms, a green room and scene shop. If requested, a portable shell, choir risers and an array of platforms is available.
Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building
The Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building, completed in 1971, is the primary venue for the performing arts events on campus. The building houses the 340-seat Helen Connor Laird Theatre, the Fine Arts Gallery, and the UW Box Office for ticket sales on the building’s main level. The intimate arena-style Black Box Theatre and rehearsal and practice rooms for theatre and music students are found on the lower level.
The Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building was officially named by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents in 1984 to honor the memory of Helen Connor Laird (1888-1982), a lifelong resident of Marshfield and patron of the arts in the community. Mrs. Laird was the first woman president of the Marshfield Board of Education and a member of the UW Board of Regents (1951-1959).
Many of the special programs in the arts which are presented in the Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building are made possible by the Laird Fund for the Arts, established and sustained by the family of Helen Connor Laird.

Facility Rental Fees
Review our Space Rental Booklet for information on renting spaces on campus. We charge a facility rental fee for all room usage on our campus to help us pay for the additional cost of maintenance and building upkeep. Prices subject to yearly updates. Current pricing will be included on room reservation confirmation at time of completion.

Food Service
The Hungry Hub is offering breakfast and lunch to students, faculty, staff and community members. Operated by Sherri and Bruce Winer of Marshfield, the restaurant is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, with expanded hours for evening events at the university such as concerts and theatre performances.
