Explore sensible solutions to the challenge of increasing biodiversity, habitat quality, and landscape resilience, regardless of site conditions or silvicultural objectives. This workshop will explore examples of irregular shelterwood systems in the Central Sands ecological landscape.

This workshop will take place at UW-Madison’s Kemp Natural Resources Station and explore examples of irregular shelterwood systems in the Northern Highland ecological landscape.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS

Michael Demchik, Ph.D.

Professor of Silviculture, UW-Stevens Point

Michael Demchik is a professor of forestry at UW-Stevens Point. He teaches a range of courses and is involved in research that addresses using silviculture to reach landowner goals. He is particularly obsessed with developing methods to teach students to mark timber better, faster, and with more confidence in their decisions. He has had several jobs across federal, state, and private natural resource management in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Greg Edge

Forest Ecologist/Silviculturist, Division of Forestry – Bureau of Forest Management, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Co-Host of SilviCast​

Greg Edge is a forest ecologist/silviculturist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources-Division of Forestry. He has worked for the DNR for more than 32 years in a variety of roles, including as a forester, forest geneticist and nursery specialist, and area forestry leader. Greg graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a B.S. in forestry administration and received an M.S. in forest genetics from UW-Madison. Greg has completed the National Advanced Silviculture Program (NASP) and is a Certified Silviculturist through the U.S. Forest Service.

Brad Hutnik

Forest Ecologist/Silviculturist, Division of Forestry – Bureau of Forest Management, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Co-Host of SilviCast​

Brad Hutnik is a forest ecologist / silviculturist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Since 2012, Brad has served as a member of the WDNR Silviculture​​ Team. As such, Brad currently works statewide on forest ecology and silviculture issues and has been involved with prescribed fire as a management tool throughout his career. Brad previously served as the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway forester (2002-2012) and worked as a staff forester at Clark Forestry, Inc. (1997-2002). Brad received a bachelor’s degree in forest management at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1997. He is a Certified Silviculturist (USDA-FS) and co-host of UWSP’s SilviCast podcast.​​

Christel C. Kern, Ph.D.

Project Leader (Acting) & Research Forester, Northern Research Station, U.S. Forest Service

Christel Kern is a Research Forester at the U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Her work includes leading and developing research-management partnerships to address critical knowledge gaps in sustainable forest management. Outside of work, Christel enjoys family time and coaching Nordic skiing.
