Home Economics History

A celebration of dynamic changes in home economics at uw-stevens point

Stevens Point Normal School’s (now UW-Stevens Point) first specialty program was Domestic Science in 1902. This was a pioneering move for the young school since domestic science, later called home economics, was a new field located on only a few other campuses, none in Wisconsin. May Secrest was appointed director and teacher for the domestic science course, consisting of eight women. In 1913, Bessie May Allen was hired to head the Domestic Science Department and remained in that position for 39 years.
