New & Transfer Students

Are you considering going to college or transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) and looking forward to all the new experiences, making friends, and preparing for your future? We know that paying for your college education can be stressful and even confusing. Our team is here to help you navigate the process and assist you with any questions you may have in making your education affordable.

INVEST IN YOURSELF. BECOME A POINTER.

As a new student, you are eligible for several financial aid opportunities at UWSP. The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal, state, and institutional financial aid. In order to receive a financial aid offer, you must be admitted to UWSP. Admission information is available on the Office of Admissions website.

The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services administers federal, state, private, and institutional aid. A good place to begin is by understanding the various types and sources of financial assistance (view our Types of Aid tab) as well as the cost of attending the University. Additionally, we’ve created a financial aid brochure, FAFSA completion tips, and financial aid checklist for you to use to assist you in the financial aid process.

The FAFSA determines your eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and any need-based scholarships. Some financial aid funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so it is important to file the FAFSA as soon as possible. The deadline for priority consideration is May 1 each year.

View our Dates and Deadlines web page for more information and important financial aid dates. Be sure to activate and check your UWSP email address as this is how we will mostly be communicating with you. Already received your financial aid offer? Financial aid offers can vary from school to school, use this worksheet to compare your financial aid offers.

Transferring to UWSP?

Add our Federal School Code (003924) to your FAFSA!

As a transfer student, if you are transferring mid-year, it is best that you notify the financial aid office at your current institution that you will be transferring to the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. If you have already filed the appropriate year’s FAFSA, you may simply add UWSP’s federal school code to your FAFSA so we can receive your application. Click on the login button to “add a school” and follow the instructions. UWSP’s Federal School Code is 003924.

Please note that student financial aid does not directly transfer between schools. Instead, UWSP will recalculate your eligibility from scratch based on the information on your FAFSA and the availability of funds remaining. Certain types of government aid are portable, while campus-based aid such as Federal Work-Study is not. In addition, any money awarded by the institution from its own funds will not transfer. Oftentimes, transfer students, especially mid-year transfers, may qualify for less financial aid than first-time and continuing students.

If you are transferring in the middle of the academic year, the amount of federal student aid for which you are eligible will be reduced by the amount of federal student aid you received at the previous school. There are cost of attendance caps on the amount of federal student aid you can receive. Based on the cost of each institution, for instance, if UWSP is much less expensive than the previous school, the amount of financial aid you can receive might be reduced. Keep your current university informed about your intent to transfer. Any university will be within its rights to withhold official transcripts if you have unpaid bills. This could make it difficult for you to transfer your credits to UWSP.

The FAFSA has space for you to list up to twenty school codes. To send your FAFSA information to UWSP, list our school code in one of the fields. If all fields are filled, replace one of them with our school code. It may take a week for us to receive the data from your FAFSA and communicate with you. Be sure to submit any supplemental forms required by us in a timely manner.

It is our hope that you will find the information on our financial aid website helpful. If you have any questions, please visit our visit our frequently asked questions, browse our website, call us at (715) 346-4771, or email us at finaid@uwsp.edu.

Graduate Students

Whether you are working towards your Master’s Degree or a Doctoral Degree, our financial aid team is here to assist you every step of the way. We’re here to help make attending the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP) possible for you.

UWSP. IT’S WORTH IT.

Graduate students may be eligible for financial aid if they are enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree at UWSP. However, once a student receives their first bachelor’s degree, they are no longer eligible for federal or state grants. Therefore, graduate students are primarily offered student loans and work-study, but there may be additional funding available through specific graduate departments.

To be offered financial aid administered by Financial Aid and Veteran Services, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. Additionally, you must be admitted as a degree-seeking graduate student. Admission information is available on the Office of Admissions website. Be sure to activate and check your UWSP email address as this is how we will mostly be communicating with you.

Below are financing methods for affording a UWSP education.

You may view your estimated cost of attendance on our web page or view tuition and fee rates on the Student Financial Services website. Should your educational costs be more than what we estimated in our cost of attendance, contact us for a budget appeal. If you have questions, visit our frequently asked questions page, browse our website, call us at (715) 346-4771, or email us at finaid@uwsp.edu.

International Students

The decision to invest in a quality higher education is one of the most important decisions you can make. Unfortunately, most foreign citizens are not eligible for federal student aid from the U.S. Department of Education. There are, however, some instances in which noncitizens may be eligible for financial aid from the U.S. federal government (see below eligible noncitizen criteria). Additionally, undergraduate international students may be eligible for UWSP’s nonresident fee waiver. By working together with our financial aid team, we want to help you, the best we can, with funding options so you can achieve your educational goals.

UWSP. THE RIGHT INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE.

Eligible Noncitizen

A U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swains Island), U.S. permanent resident (who has an I-151, I-551 or I-551C [Permanent Resident Card]), or an individual who has an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) showing one of the following designations:

  • “Refugee”
  • “Asylum Granted”
  • “Cuban-Haitian Entrant (Status Pending)”
  • “Conditional Entrant” (valid only if issued before April 1, 1980)
  • Victims of human trafficking, T-visa (T-2, T-3, or T-4, etc.) holder
  • “Parolee” (You must be paroled into the United States for at least one year and you must be able to provide evidence from the USCIS that you are in the United States for other than a temporary purpose and that you intend to become a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.)

If you meet the noncitizen criteria above, you are eligible to receive federal student aid. If you are unsure of your eligibility, go ahead and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If additional information is needed, we will contact you.

Please be sure to visit our International Student and Scholar Services website provided by the Office of International Education.

Parents

Cost is a major consideration when choosing a college. The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP) is committed to providing students an affordable, high-quality education. We recognize that parents are an integral part of the financial aid process. Parents of UWSP students are key partners in the financing of their student’s education. We are here to offer counseling to help you, help your student navigate the financial aid process and meet the costs of their education. We know, it’s a big decision to go on and pursue a college degree but, we truly believe, by earning a degree from UWSP, it’s one of the best investments your student can make.

SMALL SETTING. BIG VALUE.

We encourage you to spend some time reviewing the information and links to pages within the Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services website. It is our hope that we will provide you with essential information concerning financial aid. Additionally, we have created a FAQ specifically for you!

While most of our communications will be with your student, this website provides you with some of the general information we may be also sharing with your student. We urge you to keep the lines of communication open with your student as the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits the amount of information we can provide and share with you.

Most of our communication with your student will be via their university email account so if they haven’t activated it yet, you may want to remind them! We have attempted to answer the most frequently asked questions by parents on our website; however, if you have other questions, please call us at (715) 346-4771, or email us at finaid@uwsp.edu.

On behalf of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, we look forward to welcoming your student to the Pointer family!
