UWSP’s Schmeeckle Reserve to host family nature programs this March

UWSP’s Schmeeckle Reserve family nature programs return this spring with free, hands-on programs that explore the outdoors.


Step into nature at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve this spring with free family nature programs open to the public.

Led by UW-Stevens Point natural resources students studying environmental education and interpretation, the programs will be offered in March. Programs will take place at Schmeeckle Reserve, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Please dress for the weather.

March programs include:

  • *Backyard Superheroes, Saturday, March 7, 2-3 p.m., Menzel Pavilion, Is the opossum in your backyard a nuisance or one of nature’s superheroes? Take a hike around Schmeeckle and discover the superpowers of urban wildlife that share our home of Stevens Point.
  • *Rise and Shine, Hibernators!, Sunday, March 8, 2-3 p.m., Green Circle Trailhead, Ever wonder where animals go during the winter? Put your investigation skills to the test as we find out where our animal friends hibernate and how they wake up!
  • *Sunset Secrets: Life on the Edge, Friday, March 13, 6-7 p.m., Menzel Pavilion, In between the day and the night, creatures of Schmeeckle come to life. Travel the trails at dusk and discover the creative ways that wildlife use the twilight hours.
  • *Brighter Together, Wednesday, March 25, 6-7 p.m., Menzel Pavilion, What is something that ties us all together but is often taken for granted? The Sun! Join us on an exploratory walk as we uncover the surprising ways that plants, animals, and people depend on the sun.
  • Backyard Baskets: Weaving Order from Chaos, Friday, March 27, 6-7 p.m., Visitor Center Meeting Room, Vanquish beastly weeds while making something beautiful. Discover practical uses for backyard vegetation like hackberry and nettle. We will learn basic weaving and cording techniques, helping our natural community along the way.
  • *Counting Wildlife, Creating Science, Sunday, March 29, 2-3 p.m., Visitor Center Meeting Room, How do we know where animals live and migrate? Community science helps us understand more about the natural world, and you can get involved! Enjoy a guided walk through Schmeeckle while using your phone to build our collective knowledge.
