The child, youth and family studies minor provides a means to enhance a human development knowledge base for students in other related fields. The coursework provides students with knowledge and understanding of issues regarding children and their families and emphasizes the importance of family dynamics, resiliency, community wellness and quality of life.

As an undergraduate in the communication sciences and disorders program, you will study the development of children’s speech and language skills, the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms, as well as how speech, language and hearing impairments may impact successful communication.

The family adversity and adaptation certificate allows you to become conversant in challenges facing individuals and families today as well as strategies and techniques to deal with that stress in healthy ways.

The family and consumer sciences (FCS) program is one of the largest offered in the country. Our program, which is approved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) and provides coursework that meets the standards required for graduates to obtain the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation, offers two options: Child Life and Family Studies; Teacher Education.

Child life and family studies students are nationally certified to work with families in a variety of settings, agencies and programs. Graduates take positions working in childcare, youth centers, adoption agencies, family crisis and elder care programs.

Become certified to teach family and consumer sciences in elementary and secondary schools and technical institutions or community colleges through the family and consumer sciences-teacher education program at UW-Stevens Point.

The financial literacy certificate is awarded upon successful completion of a series of courses that center on competence and proficiency in personal financial well-being. Valued by community organizations and public schools, the certificate demonstrates expertise in personal finance and prepares individuals to educate and assist others in achieving financial goals.

The food and nutrition major, launching spring 2026, prepares students to become field experts who can work in a wide range of workplace settings. Students master skills to support the notion that food is medicine via active learning and practice in classes, community settings and student organizations. Our program challenges students to incorporate comprehensive sustainability (environment, society and economics) into course work and promote nutrition within the seven dimensions of wellness.

Interested in making a difference in your community? The community nutrition option prepares students to develop programs and work with the public on issues related to food, nutrition, agriculture, sustainability and health as a nutritionist, community educator or food system expert.

Want to help individuals manage chronic conditions through nutrition? The dietetics option provides the skills and information students need to become a professionally recognized registered dietitian (RD) or dietetic technician, registered (DTR) and assist others to make food choices that will help prevent and treat chronic diseases.
