Choose Theatre Design and Technology at UW-Stevens Point

The theatre design and technology program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point offers its students a variety of disciplines and venues. The core requirements of the degree offer a broad range while the elective options permit focused, in-depth training in particular areas. Courses are offered in all levels of scenic, lighting, costume, makeup, sound and properties design. Specialty courses include scene painting, costume crafts, rendering techniques, technical production, costume construction, stage management and computer technology.

The department offers an active production schedule that affords design/tech students ample opportunities to assist and lead design both mainstage and studio productions as well as dance performances. Hands-on immersion behind the scenes provides the greatest chance for students to put their classroom skills to use and experiment with new ideas. Courses are offered in all levels of scenic, lighting, costume, makeup, sound and properties design.

The department prides itself in striking a balance between academic and production work. Both areas are vitally important. We believe in student learning through active participation in theatrical productions. Design and technical majors typically have a production assignment every semester during their tenure in our department. Beginning responsibilities usually start with smaller shows and/or assistant positions. Students build on their successes and as seniors often design large productions on our main stage. Building your résumé

At UW-Stevens Point, theatre design and technology majors have opportunities each year to design and work in a variety of venues in the Jenkins Theatre, our black box Studio Theatre and dance studios. The department produces a full season of contemporary and classical theater as well as musicals and dance concerts. There are multiple production opportunities including fully mounted productions in the Noel Fine Arts Center.

Outside the classroom

Players Student Artistic Alliance is a group that coordinates trips to see shows in Minneapolis and Chicago. The group also mounts student-designed and directed productions and produces “Spotlight” performances that give majors the chance to share their own original work with their peers. The department also participates in the American College Theatre Festival and has sponsored productions that have toured and successfully competed in regional festivals.
