Biography

Sarwat Najib Azad was born in Afghanistan, and she is one of the many Afghan evacuees who recently resettled in the United States. She lives with her husband and four young children.

Sarwat is a well-known face to those following Afghan fashion: she worked as the head designer during the presidential campaign for Ashraf Ghani, the former Afghan president. Sarwat has also worked as the women’a empowerment director for many non-profit organizations in Afghanistan. She established Shamla Atelier, an Afghan fashion brand in Afghanistan, in 2019 and soon made her way to western clients.   Sarwat holds two degrees, a bachelor’s in journalism and a bachelor in Fine Arts.

Sarwat has written hundreds of political, cultural, and historical short stories, columns, articles, and poems mainly on war, injustice, and inequality.

Besides her art and academic career, Sarwat has often been busy helping needy families. She and her husband had already established non-profit and charity organizations in Afghanistan, providing thousands of Afghans with food, shelter, medicine, clothes, and education. In 2022, when she started living in the USA, she and her husband established Focus Development Organization, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which provides humanitarian assistance and education to the people of Afghanistan.
