UWSP History and International Studies majors and minors are eligible to apply for many of the scholarships and awards listed below.

Academic Awards

Awarded to a junior majoring in history with a teaching emphasis. Juniors majoring in History and Social Studies Education are eligible for this scholarship. Preference given to a Wisconsin high school graduate. Award of $500. The application process includes submission of a one-page document that explains how your major (History, History and Social Studies Education, or International Studies) prepares you to be a citizen of your community and the world in the 21st century.  

Awarded to a graduating senior majoring in Broadfield Social Science, or History and Social Studies Education with high academic achievement and potential as a future teacher. Award of $1,500. The application process includes submission of a one-page document that explains how your major (History, History and Social Studies Education, or International Studies) prepares you to be a citizen of your community and the world in the 21st century.

Awarded to an undergraduate majoring or minoring in history who has authored a superior paper in either HIST 489 or HIST 490. The student is selected by faculty nomination. There is no application. Award of $500.

Awarded to a major or minor within the History and International Studies Department who demonstrates scholarship achievement, service to the university, and to the discipline of history. Award of $1,000. The application process includes submission of a one-page document that explains how your major (History, History and Social Studies Education, or International Studies) prepares you to be a citizen of your community and the world in the 21st century.

Given to an undergraduate majoring in History, History and Social Studies Education, or International Studies with high academic achievement and potential. Amounts vary-see below.

  • Elwin Sigmund Memorial Scholarship $500
  • Waclaw Soroka Memorial Scholarship $1000
  • Richard Face Memorial Scholarship $500
  • Herbert Steiner Memorial Scholarship $500
  • Rhys W. Hays Memorial Award $500
  • Sally Kent Memorial Scholarship $253

The application process includes submission of a one-page document that explains how your major (History, History and Social Studies Education, or International Studies) prepares you to be a citizen of your community and the world in the 21st century.

Awarded to a first-year student or sophomore who shows promise in the study of history. The student is selected by faculty nomination. There is no application. Award of $500.

An undergraduate major within the History and International Studies Department with high academic achievement and potential.  There is no application. Award of $253.

An undergraduate majoring or minoring in international studies who authored a superior paper in the capstone experience course in international studies. The student is selected by the capstone course instructor. There is no application. Award of $253.

Thanking your scholarship donor is an important part of the scholarship process. It is a requirement of University Foundation before receipt of the scholarship. Information on thanking your donor will be provided to you when your scholarship is awarded. Postage and mailing is handled by the College of Letters and Science.
