Explore the blooming landscape at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve this spring.

The annual Spring Candlelight Hike will be held at the reserve, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, from 7-9:30 p.m., Friday, May 3. Themed “Hopping into Spring,” this family-friendly event offers torch-lit trails, character programs at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., snacks, crafts and live animals. A donation of $4 per person or $10 per family is suggested to support future events, programs and projects of the Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve.

Parking for this popular event is offered in the reserve’s overflow lot and on North Point Drive, Michigan Avenue and Maria Drive. The paved Visitor Center lot is reserved for those with disabilities or other special needs.

Family Nature Programs are free, open to the public and led by UW-Stevens Point students studying environmental education and interpretation. Be prepared to go outside and dress for the weather. Meet at the Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, unless otherwise noted.

The following programs will be offered this spring:

  • “Peek-A-Boo,” Saturday, April 13, 11 a.m.-noon. Discover how different creatures use invisibility to sneak around Schmeeckle.
  • “Plant Identification for Beginners,” Saturday, April 13, 1-2 p.m. Learn to identify differences between common plants.
  • “Buzzworthy Battle: Bees vs Wasps,” Sunday, April 14, 1-2 p.m. Take a close look at unique insects and learn why they are important to ecosystems.
  • “Sensational Scavengers,” Sunday, April 14, 5-6 p.m. Explore how scavenger animals have a special diet that sets them apart from the rest.
  • “De-Stress in Nature,” Saturday, April 20, 11 a.m.-noon. Explore the different ways the great outdoors can help your wellness.
  • “Hop, Slither, Swim,” Friday, April 26, 5-6 p.m. Learn about critters that creep and crawl and why they are misunderstood.
  • “The Need for Seeds,” Saturday, April 27, 11 a.m.-noon. Create a seed ball to grow while learning about the connection between humans and seeds.
  • “Focus in on Nature,” Saturday, April 27, 1-2 p.m. Develop your photography skills as you learn how to look at landscapes with a different perspective.
  • “A Flower’s Purpose,” Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m.-noon. Discover the uses of the gorgeous flowers found around Schmeeckle Reserve.

Participants must register for the Family Nature Programs by emailing schmeeckle@uwsp.edu, calling 715-346-4992 or in person at the Visitor Center. Include the programs you want to attend, total in your group, your email address and phone number. Confirmations, cancellations or rain rescheduling information will be sent via email. Reasonable accommodation for special needs will be made with advance notice.

Schmeeckle Reserve is a field station of UW-Stevens Point, operated by the College of Natural Resources to protect and restore ecosystems, serve as an outdoor classroom for learning, and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Learn more at www.uwsp.edu/schmeeckle.
