Schmeeckle Reserve offers nature programs at UW-Stevens Point in March

Explore the wonders of nature at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve this March.

Family Nature Programs are free, open to the public and led by UW-Stevens Point students studying environmental education and interpretation . Be prepared to go outside and dress for the weather. Meet at the Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, unless otherwise noted.

The following programs will be offered in March:

  • “Sounds of Schmeeckle,” Friday, March 8, 5-6 p.m. Listen closely to hear the sounds of nature and why they are made.
  • “Dealing with the Cold,” Saturday, March 9, 11 a.m.-noon. Bundle up with your scarves and jackets to discover how wildlife adapts to bear the cold winter months.
  • “Schmeeckle’s Hidden Treasures,” Friday, March 15, 5-6 p.m. Explore high and low to unearth the natural hidden treasures within Schmeeckle.
  • “Here a Deer, There a Deer,” Saturday, March 16, 11 a.m.-noon. Bring the kids to participate in deer-related activities while learning about deer ecology and why the deer population is so high.
  • “Soaring Through Schmeeckle,” Friday, March 29, 5-6 p.m. Discover the tools bald eagles use to survive and how threats can affect these birds.
  • “Busy Beavers,” Saturday, March 30, 11 a.m.-noon. Discover the creatures behind lodges and dams and watch a model demonstration.
  • “Nuts for Squirrels,” Saturday, March 30, 2-3 p.m. Learn about the favorite furry friends of Schmeeckle Reserve.

Participants must register for the Family Nature Programs by emailing schmeeckle@uwsp.edu, calling 715-346-4992 or in person at the Visitor Center. Include the programs you want to attend, total in your group, your email address and phone number. Confirmations, cancellations or rain rescheduling information will be sent via email. Reasonable accommodation for special needs will be made with advance notice.

Schmeeckle Reserve is a field station of UW-Stevens Point, operated by the College of Natural Resources to protect and restore ecosystems, serve as an outdoor classroom for learning, and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Learn more at www.uwsp.edu/schmeeckle.
