UW-Stevens Point celebrates Poem in Your Pocket Day in April April 11, 2024 UW-Stevens Point will celebrate National Poetry Month by participating in Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 18. Celebrate the joy of poetry by sharing a poem as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point marks Poem in Your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 18. April marks National Poetry Month and brings with it Poem in Your Pocket Day, encouraging people to select a poem, carry it with them and share it with friends, family, colleagues and strangers alike. The UW-Stevens Point Libraries aims to bring their reach beyond the library walls to engage Central Wisconsin region in the celebration of poetry. “We’re thrilled to bring the joy of poetry to our community in such a tangible way,” said Marketing/Outreach Librarian Nerissa Nelson. “Poem in Your Pocket Day is a great opportunity for people to connect through the shared language of poetry, fostering moments of discovery and appreciation in an unexpected way on that day.” For those looking for a poem for the day, the UWSP Libraries and their community partners will provide access to a variety of poems in print and digital formats. This celebration also serves as an invitation to explore the extensive collections of poetry available through libraries and bookstores in your neighborhood. In celebration of National Poetry Month and the UW-Stevens Point Allen F. Blocher Planetarium’s 60th anniversary, the planetarium will host “Poetry in the Planetarium” on Saturday, April 20, from 2-3 p.m. This free event will feature six astronomy-themed poem readings by UWSP students. “We encourage everyone to join us on April 18 in sharing the love of poetry,” added Nelson. “It’s a simple yet meaningful way to connect, engage and inspire.” Poem-In-Your-Pocket Day is an official activity created by the American Academy of Poets as part of National Poetry Month.
