A world-renowned educator, broadcaster and author will recount inspiring and heartbreaking tales of America’s racial history during Black History Month at UW-Stevens Point.
Alvin Hall will speak on his journey to write his latest work, “Driving the Green Book: A Road Trip Through the Living History of Black Resistance,” on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 4-5:30 p.m., in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room and online. The presentation is sponsored by UWSP Sentry School of Business and Economics, UWSP Diversity and College Access and part of the Tommy G. Thompson Statewide Speaker Series.
Hall guides readers through a road trip following a historic travel guide African American travelers used during segregation and the Jim Crow era to help them find safe havens and travel with confidence. Through his time on the road, he collected personal testimonies from many locals along the way. The first 300 in-person attendees will each receive a free copy of “Driving the Green Book.” Refreshments and a book signing with Hall will be offered following the keynote presentation. Students who attend the keynote will receive a Pro Events credit and must use their UWSP email address if attending online.
Overcoming a difficult start in life, Hall has now circled the globe as a television and radio broadcaster on the BBC, a bestselling and award-winning author of more than twenty titles and a financial educator, from teaching classes for financial institutions to writing children’s books about money. He is also a member of the NYSE Euronext Financial Literacy Advisory Committee to help develop programs on personal finances for the general public.
