Prior to joining the staff in the School of Education, Karla was a family and consumer science and health education teacher in the Stevens Point Area Public School District, Fond du Lac School District, and Hawaii Public Schools.

Last book you read?

The Teachers by Alexandra Robbins. This book gives a raw look at what classrooms across America are currently facing. Education today is not like it used to be. We are at a turning point in education and need brave people to be strong educators.

Best advice you ever received?

“Always hire the hardest worker” Skills can be taught, but work ethic is within you. Work ethic will win over flash every time.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a meteorologist for quite a while, but the reality of green screens instead of actual maps turned me off, so teaching became my path. I believe in education and the impact a teacher can have.

One thing about your school that you are most proud of?

Helping others become better is at the core of what education is all about. This department cares about getting more people out there to keep that going.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Teaching is so challenging, but ultimately very rewarding. No two days are the same and some days are actually pretty entertaining! Building relationships and seeing the human side of another person is very enjoyable.

A piece of advice for students in your school?

You have to have strong intentions to want to help others, knowing that it’s going to be hard. There is no other job like it. Teaching is the heart of the educational system.
