Business and Society Lecture: Prof. John List (March 3, 2022)

University of Chicago Professor of Economics and UW-Stevens Point alumnus John List ’92 spoke to students about his recent book, “The Voltage Effect: How to Make Good Ideas Great and Great Ideas Scale.” All great ideas have one thing in common: They are not guaranteed to succeed. Why do some ideas make it big while others fail to take off? Prof. List says it comes down to a single question: Can the idea scale? “There’s only one way to change the world: at scale.”

Employer Spotlight: Portage County Business Council (April 29, 2021)

The mission of the Portage County Business Council is to attract and retain both businesses and talent. The council runs numerous programs to make Portage County ”a great place to live, work and play.” One program of special interest to UWSP students is the Ignite Young Professionals group, which welcomes UWSP students to its networking, professional development and community service events. The guests at this event shared how they discovered their respective passions for non-profit and community-building work, as well as offered advice for students as they launch their careers.

Employer Spotlight: S.C. Swiderski (April 15, 2021)

S.C. Swiderski designs, plans, constructs, owns, and operates an extensive real estate portfolio in Wisconsin. They currently have 21 multi-family developments across the state and many new developments in the works. They have also recently expanded into building and selling single-family homes. Our guests discussed the many career paths available within the construction and real estate fields and emphasized that success in these fields does not depend upon having a specific degree.

Employer Spotlight: Northwestern Mutual (April 8, 2021)

Northwestern Mutual is a national insurance, investment and financial-planning company based in Wisconsin. They offer internships to continuing students as well as post-graduate internships for those who have already completed their degrees. Interns are provided with extensive training and mentoring to maximize the chances for success. The speakers at this event highlighted the flexibility and freedom of the financial-planning career path, as well as the rewards of helping other people achieve important life goals.
