Mark Goodman admits he didn't initially believe his student, Zack Everhart, would make much headway on the television show "So You Think You Can Dance."

But the "awkward, skinny kid with size 27 feet" that Goodman began working with nine years ago has pleasantly surprised his mentor, advancing to the top eight finalists of the televised dance competition.

The show, now in its 11th season, appears Wednesday nights on the Fox television network. Dancers qualify through auditions held throughout the United States, then go through additional rounds to test their ability to adapt to different styles of dance. A group of finalists is chosen to compete in televised performances for the votes of viewers, which are combined with the input from a panel of judges to determine who moves forward until a winner is chosen. The eventual champion wins a cash prize and the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
