An internationally renowned composer will be the featured guest at a concert of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony Friday, March 6.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. The program will feature two works by composer David Gillingham, professor emeritus at Central Michigan University, who will speak about both pieces. The concert will also feature multiple faculty soloists and apprentice student conductor, Jane Ryder. The ensemble is directed by Michael Butler, assistant professor and director of bands.
The Wind Symphony will perform "Intrada Jubilante" by Gillingham as well as "The Pathfinder of Panama" by John Philip Sousa, "Ammerland" by Jacob de Haan and "The Cowboys" by John Williams.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform Gillingham's "With Heart and Voice" as well as "Overture to Dancer in the Dark" by Björk, "Baile Si Quiere!" by Jeff Scott and "Home Away from Home" by Catherine Likhuta.
Gillingham will work with student performers prior to the concert. He is known for composing works for concert bands and percussion ensembles that are now regarded as standard repertoire.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
