With a focus on infrastructure, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Center for the Small City will host the 23rd Conference on the Small City and Regional Community on Thursday, March 24.
The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. via Zoom, with a selection of presenters on the theme of "Building Infrastructure in Small Cities, Towns and Rural Areas: Current Needs and Future Designs."
The featured speaker at 1 p.m. is Craig Thompson, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He will present "Infrastructure Needs in Wisconsin: Present Demands and Future Prospects."
A variety of sessions will be offered throughout the day, with panels of presenters on the topics of demographic perspectives, housing and transportation, local governments and infrastructure and social and economic development. Presenters include faculty from UW-Stevens Point, UW-Extension, UW-La Crosse, Illinois State University, Indian Institute of Management and National University of Ukraine, as well as representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and several area municipalities.
Those invited to attend include officials, professionals, researchers, citizens and others interested in public participation and civic advancement in small cities and towns. Established at UW-Stevens Point in 1980, the Center for the Small City is an outreach unit within the College of Letters and Science. Along with conducting and facilitating research, the center sponsors seminars and workshops and has organized the biennial Conference on the Small Cities and Regional Community since 1978.
