Uses of Moccasins

Moccasins were the shoes of Native Americans. Some were left undecorated for basic use, while others were decorated for special occasions and ceremonies. Sometimes, beautifully decorated moccasins were made to trade or to give as gifts.

The Moccasin game was generally played by men as a gambling game. An even number of moccasins up to ten were used, generally four, and a small object, such as a bullet, stone, or a little billet of wood, was hidden in one of the moccasins. The player will point to which moccasin they think the object is in and count was kept with beans or sticks. Now, pads of cloth are mostly used in place of moccasins.

Rock Your Mocs Week is a week dedicated to wearing moccasins. If you have a pair of moccasins, you would wear them between November 15-21 to show your pride in the Native American culture you wear on your feet. This is a worldwide social media event, and for more information visit: https://rockyourmocs.org/.
