An Awareness Event for Breaking Down Barriers and Creating an Inclusive Community

AIM
Participants will understand white privilege, discover their own identity, and work to build a strong Pointer and Stevens Point community for all populations.
GOAL
To develop awareness of our own identity in the context of white privilege in the 21st century, explore systemic issues including racism and systems of inequality on our own campus and in the larger community, and collaborate as a community to identify action steps to serve all populations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Participants will be able to explain white privilege and power and why it’s important to understand.
2. Participants will explore U.S. social groups and how they interrelate, and specifically focus on UWSP and the Stevens Point community.
3. Participants will discover new understandings and skills that develop your ability to be adaptive and successful in multiple cultural settings.
4. Participants will collaborate to break down barriers that interfere with student success.
5. Participants will learn methods and steps to support students, faculty and staff when racist actions happen on campus and in the community.
Future Opportunities for Exploration, Discussion and Action – Collaboration and Action Steps
Diversity Council is exploring institutional barriers students encounter, reviewing policies and procedures and making recommendations for change that breaks down barriers and better supports students, faculty and staff.
