Researchers were happy to find a healthy female black bear resting in her den, but the discovery of four cubs, rather than two or three, was a pleasant surprise.

Tim Ginnett, professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, along with DNR biologists, local educators and others, gathered information March 5 about a female bear and her cubs residing in a den. The den was located at Treehaven, a natural resources education, conference, and research center located near Tomahawk, Wis.

The information collected is part of the Wisconsin black bear research project, which has been led by UWSP for more than 25 years.
