Eighty two students, including many from UW-Stevens Point and some employees from the Department of Natural Resources, are training to learn how to handle, contain, and suppress fires, sometimes without even using water.
A partnership between the DNR, and the UWSP Fire Crew created a federally certified wildland firefighter program that spans over 40 hours between two weekends.
The classroom is both indoors and outdoors.
While students learn the technical aspects sitting at a desk, volunteers take the group outside to learn how to put out a burn pile using only metal tools and the environment around them, especially when water is not readily available.
Kent Glazer, a forest ranger, was one of the DNR employees helping train students on Saturday in Stevens Point.
