UWSP students get hands-on fire training

While many college students still were sound asleep Saturday morning, Morgan Cannon and Katie Newman were digging holes and covered in soot.

Cannon and Newman were two of 80 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students who were training in wildfire suppression and control techniques Saturday at the UWSP Hydrology Lab.

The training is part of a class offered at UWSP to teach students the basics of fire management, control and suppression. Many, but not all, of the students are part of the university's natural resources program.
