Saint Stanislaus and Saint Stephen Catholic elementary schools are being honored with a national award for helping students improve their reading skills.

The schools received the Innovations in Catholic Education award in the category of innovative project in curriculum and instruction. Developed by Today’s Catholic Teacher magazine, the annual awards honor Catholic elementary and secondary schools that “have led the way by implementing exemplary, innovative programs to improve the teaching and learning of their students, faculty and staffs.”

Gregg Hansel, principal at St. Stanislaus and St. Stephen and lead principal for Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools, said the award is based on several initiatives. The Points Alliance with St. Stan’s, or PAWS, brings professors and education students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to work on reading with students. That program started in 2011 through a $10,000 grant received from the Oscar W. Neale Memorial Fellowship, which supports collaboration between UWSP faculty and educators in central Wisconsin.
