University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's newest students put some elbow grease into the city they'll call home for four years during the 20th annual Labor of Love day of community service.

First-year students from UWSP volunteer each year through the program for a few hours at local businesses and organizations to help with projects they need completed. About 100 students lent a helping hand around Stevens Point on Tuesday at 10 locations including Goodwill, the Cupboard, area churches, Schmeeckle Reserve, the fire department and the Co-Op.

"The whole idea is that the Stevens Point community gives so much to this university and this area, so it's a chance for our newest students to connect with the community and give back," said event coordinator Kathleen MacLeay, who is a residential hall director at UWSP. "It's a great opportunity for our new students to get a feel for the community and meet folks and see different businesses and kind of understand that the university is a family and so is the community in the area."
