Chancellor: Efforts could ease impact of cuts on UWSP

As we continue to wrestle with potential cuts to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, I am reminded of a quote from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Herbert Swope: "I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody."

At the core of a university is an environment where ideas, even unpopular ideas, are examined and debated. The willingness to speak, to listen, to respect differences and have civil discourse, leads to more informed decisions.

Every day, the university looks at ways to minimize the impact a significant budget cut will have on our students, faculty, staff members and programs.

Based on the governor's current budget proposal, we estimate more than 100 positions would need to be eliminated from our workforce of an estimated 1,100. To reduce the number of involuntary separations, we are looking first at not filling open positions — nearly half of the 100. Most organizations have some open positions in the process of being filled because of retirements and resignations. Many of these positions are critical to our mission.​
