Even the best teams get knocked down. The champions get back up again.

I shared that message at forums with faculty, staff and students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the past week as we consider how to deal with what would be a devastating blow to our institution.

Gov. Scott Walker proposes cutting the UW System by $150 million for each of the next two years, reducing the state deficit by $300 million. For context, $150 million is equal to the total state support for five UWs: Green Bay, Parkside, River Falls, Stevens Point and Whitewater.

At UWSP, this translates to an estimated 17 percent cut in state support, or an estimated $6.4 million. It would be the largest cut in our 121-year history.
