When you first enter the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility near Red Cliff, one of the first things you notice is the pronounced “fishy” smell.
Facilities Director Greg Fischer will tell you that aroma is the smell of the future for sustainable fisheries technology.
“We are doing things that are different than anybody else, we are able to help a lot of different agencies and groups and we have a lot of different stakeholders who are invested into this,” he said.
Fischer said programs to help develop sustainable methods to rear Atlantic salmon, Arctic char, rainbow trout and walleye hybrids show great promise in increasing stocks of nutritious, healthy fish products in a way that is good for the environment and affordable for consumers. These methoids are being demonstrated for the first time at the facility.
