Former Stevens Point Mayor Gary Wescott has been appointed interim executive director of University Relations and Communications by Chancellor Bernie Patterson at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Wescott served as mayor from 1995 until 2007 and recently as the city’s interim mayor. He is the longest serving mayor in Stevens Point history.

He begins his new role today, succeeding Kate Worster, who was named associate vice president for marketing communications at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.  A search will start this summer for a permanent executive director.

Wescott worked for more than 20 years in commercial broadcasting, as a radio station manager, operations manager, news and public affairs director, telephone talk show and cable television host.

He served as president of the Wisconsin Broadcast News Council, among other professional and community organizations. He has received awards from the Wisconsin Broadcaster’s Association, United Press International, American Cancer Society and the state of Wisconsin.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Wescott’s expertise will be valuable during the transition, Patterson said. “Gary’s experience leading complex organizations in both the public and private sector and strong connections throughout Wisconsin will serve the university well.”

The executive director is the primary communication adviser to the chancellor and provides the strategic vision and leadership for an integrated public relations and marketing program for UW-Stevens Point.
