Sustainability information fair set for Oct. 26

Learn ways to reduce energy use and live a more sustainable lifestyle during the annual National Campus Sustainability Month in October at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. 

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, two sustainability-themed films will be shown, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the Dreyfus University Center Theater. "Unbroken Ground" and "Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story" will be featured at no cost. 

Throughout October, people can sign up for a Project Green Challenge. Through conscious living, informed consumption and individual and collective action, participants are challenged to contribute to a healthy, just and thriving planet. They will receive daily email messages. Sign up as a team or individual at https://projectgreenchallenge.com/login/. 

A sustainable information fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center.  Sponsored by UW-Stevens Point's Sustainability Office, it is free and open to the public. 

A variety of businesses, nonprofit organizations and student groups will provide information about sustainability in various arenas, including locally produced food, fair-trade products, sustainable transportation, personal health, energy efficiency, waste management. 

Participants can make a personal pledge to lessen their energy consumption. Energy Action Month is a national effort to emphasize the importance of energy to national prosperity, security and environmental well-being. Food and homemade items from the CPS Café will be available for purchase during the lunch hour. 

The films "This Changes Everything," "Damnation" and "Comfort Zone" will be shown periodically throughout the fair. 

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, an Earth Jam concert will feature three bands: The popular Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, The Rumble Roots and Easy on the Eyez. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 or the day of the show for $20. Purchase tickets at University Information and Tickets in the DUC or tickets.uwsp.edu   

Nationally, Campus Sustainability Day raises awareness about sustainability successes, challenges and innovation in higher education, our communities and around the world. "These events and initiatives provide an open door for leaders to learn, promote and engage in conversations and actions to build a more sustainable future," said Ellie Corbin, student sustainability special events coordinator in UW-Stevens Point's Office of Sustainability.
