String Day 2017

9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Noel Fine Arts Center
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Participate in an exciting day of master classes, string ensembles, techniques classes, and
classes on special topics. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point string professors will lead
workshops for violin, viola, cello and bass (parents and teachers are invited to observe any of the
day's events).

Coaching of solos, études, and music for small ensembles will be available, along with other
techniques classes. There will also be a unique opportunity for a side-by-side orchestral experience
with UW-Stevens Point students and string faculty.

Please bring your instrument and any music you are currently practicing. The fee for the event is $30 per
person ($35 after January 20). All events will occur in the Noel Fine Arts Center on the UW-Stevens
Point campus.

About the Faculty

Barbara Beechey - Viola

Dr. Barbara Beechey is an active performer and educator in Wisconsin, where she is Principal Viola of both the Fox Valley Symphony and the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed in Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Steven Bjella - Violin

Professor Steven Bjella has performed throughout the United States, appearing both as soloist and in a variety of chamber ensembles. He has given master classes at across the country, and recently completed two books on violin pedagogy. At UW-Stevens Point he holds the titles of Artist/Teacher of Violin and Professor of Music.

Lawrence Leviton - Cello

Lawrence Leviton is Artist/Teacher of Cello at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He received his Doctorate in cello performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Minnesota and his Master's degree in performance from Northwestern University. He also holds a degree in psychology from the University of Illinois.Currently, he is the President of the Wisconsin Cello Society, which sponsors yearly events and promotes the appreciation and study of the cello through the state and the region. He has been a frequent performer on Wisconsin Public Radio. Dr. Leviton's students have won numerous awards both in Wisconsin and nationally. Former students of Dr. Leviton's have gone on to study cello performance in undergraduate and  graduate programs at the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Rice University, Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard school among others and are performing in professional orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the country.

Andres Moran - Orchestra

Andres Moran serves as the director of the UWSP Symphony Orchestra and artist/teacher of horn. A highly sought-after clinician and conductor, Moran has served on the conducting staffs of the El Paso Symphony, Albuquerque Youth Symphony, Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, and Music in the Mountains Conservatory.

David Story - Bass

Professor David Story is equally at home in classical and jazz as well as many other genres of music. He performs frequently in orchestral and chamber concerts, Broadway musicals, solo recitals, and at numerous jazz venues.

Highway 66 from the West:  

  • Follow Highway 66 east (Clark Street) through four traffic lights
  • Proceed one more block from the Division Street intersection (Business Hwy 51) to Phillips St.
  • Turn left on Phillips Street
  • Park in Lot Q, or north end of lot P

Interstate 39 from the East/North/South:

  • Take the Business Hwy 51 Exit from I-39 (Exit #161)
  • Follow Business Hwy 51(Division St.) through 3 traffic lights
  • Turn left on Portage Street
  • Park in Lot Q, or north end of lot P

Highway 66 from the East:

  • Follow Highway 66 west (Main Street) through seven traffic lights
  • Proceed four more blocks from the Michigan Avenue intersection to Phillips Street
  • Turn right on Phillips Street
  • Park in Lot Q, or north end of lot P
