​Music Student

The UWSP Department of Music was thrilled to “see our name in lights” when we learned of our inclusion in “The Best Music Schools 2011 Special Report.” The report appeared in the October 2010 issue of In Tune Magazine, a publication of MENC, the National Association for Music Education. The report focused on schools that have achieved technological innovations in their curricula. UWSP is in exalted company: other schools on the list of “Best Music Schools” include The Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, The University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, The University of Michigan, and Northwestern University! (The only other Wisconsin school mentioned was UW-Madison. A total of 43 schools around the country were included on the list.) The report said that “The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point points to its Musicianship program’s unique integration of computer and recording technology with traditional teaching techniques.”

​Soiree Musicale 2011

The fourteenth annual Soirée Musicale, an event supporting student scholarship in the Department of Music, will take center stage at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Noel Fine Arts Center on Friday, April 27, 2012.

 

This showcase evening of exceptional entertainment is provided by UWSP faculty, students and alumni.
Soirée Musicale helps raise funds for scholarships that bring remarkable music students to UWSP. The annual event is coordinated by a volunteer.

Danielle KindermanRecent UWSP graduate Danielle Kinderman had her original choral work ACTUS CARITATIS performed at the Mass of the Epiphany at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome for an audience including the Pope.

  • UWSP sophomore Sebastian Petak recently received an honorable mention in an International Harpsichord Composition Competition http://www.harpsichord-now.org/alienor-2012-awards.html  for his work, INDUSTRIAL TIMES.
  • UWSP junior Alexandria Mueller recently learned that her work ODYSSEY will be premiered by the Kenwood Symphony, conducted by Yuri Ivan,  in the Twin Cities on March 24th.  The wind ensemble version of this same work will be premiered by the UWSP Wind Ensemble in May 2012 under the direction of Brendan Caldwell.   Her wind band work, RUSSIAN DANCE, will also be premiered by the UW-Stevens Point Campus Band under the direction of Patrick Lawrence in Fall 2012.
  • UWSP Senior Mike Kowbel had his wind band work, EXORDIUM, premiered by the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble, Brendan Caldwell, conductor, in December 2011.
  • UWSP Senior Brent Platta had his wind band work, A DAWNING VENTURE, premiered by the UW-Stevens Point Concert Band, Brendan Caldwell, conductor, in December 2011.
  • UWSP Senior Jacob Schroeder will have his wind band work, A JOURNEY UNFAILING, premiered by the UW-Stevens Point Campus Band, Patrick Lawrence, conductor, in May 2012.

Rie Tanaka

In November of 2011 Rie Tanaka, junior piano performance major, won the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Steinway Competition in the state of Wisconsin competing against university students across the state. As a result, she  represented UWSP and Wisconsin in East Central Division competition in January of 2012, which took place at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Michael DoerrMichael Doerr, who will be an incoming freshman in the Music Department starting from Fall 2012 was chosen as one of the "Final Forte" in Madison Symphony Orchestra's Bolz Young Artist Competition. High school students from across the state compete, and only four finalists appear with John DeMain and the MSO in a concert in Overture Hall before a live audience. Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television broadcast Wisconsin Young Artists performances. Michael will perform Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on March 21, 2012 at 6:45 p.m.

Alexandria Mueller

Alexandria Mueller (b. 1991) is an emerging composer of large ensemble music.  She began studying composition with Dr. Charles Rochester Young at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point in 2007.  Mueller has composed extensively for string orchestra, wind band and choir.  Her works have been performed by ensembles of all ages and abilities.  Mueller received first place in the Kenwood Symphony (Minneapolis, MN) composition contest.  She was co-winner in University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point Music Department’s Wind Ensemble Composition Contest, and an additional submission received third place.  For the past two years, Mueller has served a Teaching Artist in the Very Young Composers’ Project, a project that invites fourth and fifth grade students to create their own music.  As a Teaching Artist, Mueller has had the opportunity to collaborate with the creator of the Very Young Composers’ Project, Jon Deak, from the New York Philharmonic.

Sean Connors and Peteer Zlotnick

Peter Zlotnick, principal timpanist of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina, will be our guest for the day, working with students during a timpani clinic and then performing in a duo recital with UWSP Professor Sean Connors.
