The Wildlife Habitat Demonstration Unit is part of a larger network of demonstration areas that showcase how timber harvesting can be integrated with practices designed to improve and maintain wildlife habitat.

The oak stand was thinned to retain white oak over red oak where possible. Mesic species were prioritized for removal to help maintain oak dominance in future regeneration across the site. Group and patch selections were used in areas with existing aspen pockets or established oak regeneration to encourage those species. A small shelterwood harvest was completed in the center of the stand to create additional areas of young forest cover. Blackberry thickets provide a natural barrier helps protect developing oak seedlings, and future brush cutting will further support oak regeneration.

Eagon Nature Education Preserve
The Burdette and Sarah Eagon Nature Education Preserve in the town of Alban, Portage County, is an education and restoration site owned by UW-Stevens Point. The property, which is managed by university students, has a mix of wetlands, uplands, grasslands, and shrublands as well as a class 1 trout stream, Flume Creek. It is also the original location of the Alban township. The site is home to a wide variety of native plants and animals, including oaks, white pines, song and game birds, and amphibians. However, invasive species such as buckthorn, honeysuckle, prickly ash, poison ivy, and spotted knapweed are also abundant.

Visiting the Property
The Eagon Preserve is open to the public for visitation year-round. Hunting, firearms, and camping are prohibited. A small grassy parking lot is available near the intersection of Flume Road, Sunset Lake Road, and County Road T. A walking trail through the demonstration area runs along the north side of Flume Road.

Upland Forest
Conditions Before Management
Prior to management, the upland forest was a mix of shrubs, central hardwoods, and conifers intermixed with invasive shrubs and plants. Most of the trees were of the same age. As a result, they were of similar size and lacked the variation desired by the focal species for cover.

Before management, two areas of shrubby grassland were present: one along the powerline corridor and another along Flume Creek Road. Both areas contained a mix of native plants, legumes, and non-native grasses. The powerline corridor also supported dense patches of poison ivy along with scattered shrubs.

The wetland area running along Flume Creek was dominated by thick groves of mature tag alder. Within the alders were scattered overstory trees, patches of red osier dogwood, and invasive species.

Upland Forest
Woodcock
Spruce was planted to create future areas of thermal cover and provide stopover locations during migration. Existing patches of conifers, including spruce and hemlock, were retained where available to maintain important winter cover and shelter.
Neotropical Migrant Birds
A clearcut with reserves was completed by removing box elder while retaining native tree species, including oak. Following the harvest, native shrubs such as plum, swamp white oak, and hazelnut were planted in protective tubes to minimize deer browsing. Native sedges were also seeded to help establish additional ground cover.
The goal of these management actions included:
- Plum planting: The area provides fruit, often referred to as soft mast, which serves as a forage resource for yellow-throated warbler, yellow warbler, veery, redstart, and rose-breasted grosbeak.
- Swamp white oak and hazelnut planting: The site provides nut, or hard mast, resources that serve as an important food source for yellow and yellow-throated warblers.
- Clearcut with reserves: An open woodland environment was created with an understory of shrubs to provide nesting habitat for veery, redstart, and pewee.
- Sedge seeding around reserve shrubs: Mature native shrubs were retained on the site, and the surrounding area was seeded with a native sedge and grass mix to create the low shrub and sedge habitat preferred by yellow-throated and yellow warblers for nesting.
- Oak reserve trees: Oaks were retained on the site, and surrounding competing trees were removed to encourage the horizontal branch growth preferred by redstarts for nesting.
Woodcock
Spruce was planted to establish future patches of thermal cover and provide important stopover locations during migration. Existing conifer patches, including spruce and hemlock, were retained where present to maintain valuable shelter and protection.
Ruffed Grouse
Large-diameter coarse woody debris, including dead and down logs, was retained to provide drumming sites. Swamp white oak seedlings were planted around these areas to create additional cover and help protect birds from predators. Spruce was planted to establish future patches of thermal cover, while existing conifer stands were preserved to provide immediate shelter.
Invasive Species
All box elder was removed, and native shrubs were planted to discourage its future establishment. The new plantings were protected with tree tubes to reduce deer browsing and improve survival. Species planted included plum and hazelnut.

Grassland
Open grasslands play an important role as singing grounds for woodcock during their spring mating season. To create this habitat component, non-native shrubs were removed and the shrubby grassland along Flume Road was rotary seeded with native plants. Maintaining the site as a grassland will require periodic prescribed burns to reduce encroaching shrubs and stimulate plant growth.

Many of the site’s focal species rely on riparian areas for foraging, cover, and nesting, while the stream provides important trout habitat.
Woodcock
- To create continuously available patches of young alder for forage and cover, 20% of the dense alder patch was sheared. This shearing will continue to occur every 5-6 years.
- Wet riparian areas also provide the moist ground needed by woodcock for finding bugs in the soil.
Neotropical Migrant Birds
- Yellow-throated and yellow warblers often nest and forage in young, dense patches of alder. To create this habitat, we initiated a 5-6 year rotation in which 20% of the alder is sheared during each rotation.
- Planted fruit and nut bearing shrubs such as plum and swamp white oak for food for veery, redstart, and rose-breasted grosbeak migrant birds.
Trout
- The Wisconsin DNR worked on channel restoration. In addition, they placed old Christmas trees along the banks of Flume Creek to assist with bank stabilization and to provide cover.

The stand was dominated by mature oaks, with smaller amounts of red maple and white pine mixed throughout. There were also scattered pockets of aspen across the stand.

The stand was thinned to favor white oak, which was retained over red oak because of its greater resistance to oak wilt. Mesic species were removed whenever possible to help maintain oak as the dominant component of future regeneration. Group and patch selections were used in areas where aspen or established oak seedlings were already present, allowing those species to expand. South of the powerline, a shelterwood harvest created additional patches of young forest that will provide valuable cover.

The riparian area will be managed to improve habitat quality while increasing the resilience of the forest to future disturbances. Existing snags will be retained to provide nesting, roosting, and foraging habitat for wildlife. In anticipation of the impacts of Emerald Ash Borer, preferred tree species such as bur oak, swamp white oak, birch, basswood, crabapple, tamarack, and white pine will be released to encourage a more diverse and sustainable forest canopy.
Native forbs, grasses, and sedges will be seeded to stabilize the soil, improve plant diversity, and enhance habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. Highbush cranberry will also be released and encouraged to provide dense shrub cover and a reliable source of soft mast for birds and mammals.

Upland Forest
Management Practices Implemented
The upland forest will be managed using group selection harvests to promote a diverse mix of tree ages and improve overall forest health. Management activities will focus on releasing and protecting important wildlife trees, including crabapple for forage and bur oak for hard mast production. Invasive buckthorn will be removed to encourage the growth of native vegetation and reduce competition with desirable species.
Reserve patches of cedar and jack pine will be maintained to provide year round thermal cover and shelter for wildlife. Existing snags will also be retained whenever it is safe to do so, providing valuable nesting, roosting, and foraging habitat for birds, mammals, and other wildlife species.

Management will follow a coppice with reserves approach to restore forest health and improve wildlife habitat following storm damage. Aspen will be regenerated through coppice harvesting to encourage vigorous new growth and maintain a healthy stand. Selected large aspen and oak trees will be retained as reserve trees to provide long term habitat, structural diversity, and important ecological benefits. Native herbaceous vegetation will also be encouraged to establish across the site, helping to suppress buckthorn and support a more resilient plant community.

The sedge meadow will be managed to maintain the open habitat conditions that support a diverse range of native plants and wildlife. This demonstration area is composed of lake and surrounding wetlands.
Management Practices Implemented
A 35-foot “no enter” zone was marked around the lakes. The overstory basal area was kept to a minimum of 80 square feet in the first 100 feet from the lakes. Much of this zone was reserved as no harvest zones to maintain large, long-lived species like red oak, red pine, and white oak.

Conditions Before Management
The red pine plantation underwent an extremely delayed first thinning in 2007 and 2008. The plantation was thinned again in 2015.
Management Practices Implemented
The plantation underwent its first thinning in 2007 and 2008. The second thinning occurred in 2015 and resulted in existing pockets of oak and maple regeneration. Pockets of aspen were cut to the north of the stand.

Mixed Central Hardwood and White Pine

Conditions Before Management
There was a mixed stand composed of red, white, and northern pin oak, red maple, white pine, birch, and big-tooth aspen. There wa a heavy understory of poison ivy.
Management Practices Implemented
Where big-tooth aspen was present, openings were created to promote regeneration through root sprouts. The next stand entry will expand these openings by 60 more feet to promote additional aspen resprout. Reserve trees of existing hardwoods, such as maple and oak, and white pines were maintained in these pockets. Conducted a group selection over pockets of existing regeneration. Crop tree release was practiced for remaining trees. On the northwest side of the hillside facing Minister Lake, white pines were crop tree released for long-rotation pine management. Effort was taken to provide forage and cover for grouse, including coppiced aspen next to hardwood patches. An opening was created adjacent to oak reserve trees to encourage horizontal branching with leaf cover, which is helpful for birds such as the redstart, veery, and scarlet tanager. Oak reserve trees provide excellent perching sites and snag retention encourages bug production and creates cavity nesting sites. Harvesting every 10-15 years will create continuous pockets of young, brushy habitat for nesting cover. This is important for breeding of birds such as mourning warblers, rose-breasted grosbeak, and chestnut sided warblers.

Boxelder and Invasive Species

Conditions Before Management
There were some oaks throughout the partial boxelder overstory. The mid-story was comprised of buckthorn, honeysuckle, autumn olive, prickly ash, and barberry. The understory was heavily infested with poison ivy and patches of stinging nettles.
Management Practices Implemented
The site was chemically treated for poison ivy and invasive species through broadcast spray, followed by spot spray. All boxelders were cut, chemically treated, and then sprouts were cut again. The site was rotary seeded and then subsequently planted with greenhouse grown forb and legume plugs. Prescribed burning is planned for the site.

Taylor County Forest
The current timber sale was carried out in 2024 and 2025. This sale has four main elements. Condition one is a two-cohort stand with high-quality oak saplings and pole-size trees. Condition 2 is oak overstory with low value hardwoods shading out existing oak advanced regeneration. Condition 3 is a northern hardwood stand with a mix of maple, basswood and oak. Condition 4 is a mature aspen stand. Prior to this, the last sale occurred between 2006 and 2007. The previous harvest was a combination of selection harvest with pockets of aspen coppice. Additionally, 23 snags were created with double girdles at that time.

Conditions Before Management
Northern Hardwood | 82 acres
Before management, the stand was a northern hardwood stand with considerable variability in basal area across the site. Areas with lower basal area contained pockets of healthy natural regeneration, while denser portions of the stand had more limited regeneration due to increased canopy cover.

Red Oak Overstory | 9 acres and Mature Aspen | 8 acres
The stand was dominated by a red oak overstory with healthy regeneration of oak seedlings and saplings throughout the understory. A good mix of northern hardwood species was also present, providing a strong foundation for future stand development.

Management Practices Implemented
An overstory removal with reserves was implemented to release high quality oak saplings and pole sized trees so they can continue to grow and develop. During the harvest, trees with high levels of microhabitat value, such as large oaks with cavities and coarse bark, were retained to provide important wildlife habitat and maintain structural diversity. Hemlock, spruce, white pine, and balsam fir that were smaller than 4 inches in diameter were also retained as conifer inclusions. These trees provide valuable nesting habitat for wildlife and offer year round thermal cover.

Management Practices Implemented
A selection harvest with gaps and group selection was implemented to release high quality crop trees and promote the continued development of desirable species. Small canopy gaps were created over areas with existing regeneration to provide additional sunlight and encourage growth. Outside of these gaps, the residual stand was managed to maintain a target basal area of approximately 70 square feet per acre. Ironwood, musclewood, and aspen greater than 2 inches in diameter were removed to reduce competition and improve growing conditions for preferred species. Pockets of aspen regeneration established after the previous harvest were retained to support species diversity and maintain valuable wildlife habitat.

A shelterwood harvest using a combination of dispersed and group shelterwood methods was implemented to encourage the establishment and growth of desirable regeneration while maintaining partial overstory cover. Where possible, high quality pole sized trees and large saplings were retained to provide a strong foundation for the future stand and support continued forest development.

A coppice with reserves harvest was implemented by removing all trees greater than 2 inches in diameter while retaining selected reserve trees. Oak, pine, spruce, tamarack, and hemlock were preserved to provide seed sources, maintain structural diversity, and support future stand development. Additional green marked wildlife trees were also retained to provide important habitat features and benefit a variety of wildlife species.

Structural Elements to Create Deer Habitat

Deer rely on areas of dense cover to meet several important habitat needs. These areas provide escape cover from predators, secure locations for bedding, and protective cover for fawns. Dense cover also serves as important breeding habitat during the reproductive season.

During winter in Wisconsin, deep snow and harsh weather can create challenges for deer survival. Areas that provide protection from wind and cold, known as thermal cover or yarding areas, are important for maintaining healthy deer populations. These areas may include dense conifer stands, sheltered forested areas, regenerating forests, and thick wetland vegetation. Thermal cover can be maintained by preserving existing habitat or created through management practices that encourage dense young forest growth.

While deer food preferences change dramatically throughout the year, woody browse usually plays a constant role. During late spring and summer, deer feed more heavily on forbs and legumes with some use of nutritious grasses as well. During this time, there is often quite a bit of available forage for deer. As summer leads into fall, high-nutrient acorns and similar hard mast begin to play a greater role in their diet. In agricultural areas, crop residues play an important role during fall. After that resource is depleted, winter reliance on woody browse is quite heavy. Managing sites so they produce woody browse, native forbs, and legumes as well as hard mast will improve deer condition and carrying capacity for a property.
Structural Elements to Create Neotropical Migratory Bird Habitat

Young forests provide important habitat for a variety of bird species. They offer foraging opportunities for birds that nest in later successional forests, such as the Cerulean Warbler, while also providing nesting habitat for species that depend on early successional conditions, such as the Golden-winged Warbler and Chestnut-sided Warbler.

Many bird species rely on older forests for nesting habitat, using different forest layers depending on their needs. For example, Ovenbirds nest on the forest floor, Scarlet Tanagers use the canopy, Black-throated Green Warblers use shrubs and young regeneration, and Great Crested Flycatchers depend on tree cavities. Other species, such as the Golden-winged Warbler, use older forests for foraging while nesting in younger forest conditions. Creating a variety of forest ages through management practices, including group selection harvests, can increase habitat diversity and support a wider range of bird species.

Reserve trees provide important habitat features in young forests by serving as singing posts, cavity nesting sites, and sources of mast depending on the tree species. Retaining reserve trees adds structural diversity to young forest stands and helps maintain habitat features that will benefit the stand as it continues to mature. Keeping trees with well developed cavities of different sizes and types provides valuable nesting opportunities for a variety of wildlife species.

Savanna is the most endangered ecosystem in Wisconsin. A collection of species utilizes savanna, most notably bird species experiencing steep declines in population. Important elements of savanna habitat include warm season grasses, high diversity of forbs and legumes, and open tree cover with a wide range of shade conditions. Prescribed fire plays an essential role in managing these sites.
Structural Elements to Create Grouse Habitat

A diverse forest with a mix of young, middle aged, and mature trees provides the variety of habitats grouse need throughout their life cycle. While young forests are important, grouse depend on a range of forest conditions for nesting, raising chicks, feeding, and winter survival.
Mature trees provide nesting cover, while dense young aspen stands with shrubs and brambles offer protection and insect food for chicks. Aspen stands between 5 and 15 years old are especially valuable for chick survival. Throughout the year, grouse rely on a variety of foods, including berries, insects, nuts, wildflowers, and winter buds from trees such as aspen and birch. Maintaining diverse forest ages and structures is key to supporting healthy grouse populations.

In the Lake States, snow roosting is one of the most energy efficient ways for grouse to stay warm during winter. Grouse will burrow into soft, fluffy snow, which acts as an insulating blanket and helps reduce energy loss. Without the ability to snow roost, grouse must use significantly more calories to maintain body temperature, making cold, snowless winters especially challenging. Areas with blackberry and dewberry patches often collect suitable snow conditions and can provide the soft, open spaces needed for grouse to create snow roosts.

Male grouse use drumming logs as display sites during the breeding season when suitable logs are available. Ideal drumming logs are generally large, long lasting trees or logs, often greater than 12 inches in diameter and at least 20 feet in length. Species such as aspen, birch, oak, and mixed conifers are preferred because they provide durable structures that remain usable over time. Logs or elevated stumps placed 12 to 18 inches above the ground can provide males with a better view of their surroundings. Drumming sites are most effective when located within young forest stands that contain dense vertical cover, especially 5 to 20 year old stands with thick woody regeneration. Maintaining one to two suitable drumming logs per acre and placing them near nesting and brood habitat can help provide important breeding habitat for ruffed grouse.

Michael Demchik is a professor of forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He teaches a wide range of courses at UWSP and is involved in research that addresses using silviculture to reach landowner goals. He is particularly obsessed with developing methods to teach students to mark timber better, faster, and with more confidence in their decisions. He has had several jobs across federal, state, and private natural resource management in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
