Small Woodlot Management

Managing small woodlots can be financially and logistically difficult. In this workshop, we will hear from a master arborist, consulting forester, and master logger on common small woodlot issues and potential solutions. Through a series of short presentations, case studies, and a question and answer session, we will explore the feasibility of four potential solutions, examples of when they’ve worked, and the role of local lumber markets in their success. Specifically, in this workshop we will cover:
- Financial and logistical constraints to small woodlot management.
- Financial considerations and field examples for each model: arborist, hybrid, cross-boundary management, and “traditional” forest management.
- External considerations for small woodlot management including local log markets.

This workshop is designed for professional foresters and natural resource managers. It counts toward the Forest Management for Wildlife Certificate.

Workshop Instructor
Mike Demchik, Ph.D.
Professor of Silviculture, UW-Stevens Point
Michael Demchik is a professor of forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He teaches a wide range of courses at UWSP and is involved in research that addresses using silviculture to reach landowner goals. He is particularly obsessed with developing methods to teach students to mark timber better, faster, and with more confidence in their decisions. He has had several jobs across federal, state, and private natural resource management in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
