Climate Change and Upper Great Lakes Forests

The climate change online course is divided into two modules: 1) Climate change impacts in the Upper Great Lakes region, and 2) Climate change and forest health. The first module covers information related to climate change impacts on natural resources (including forestry), agriculture, community planning, tribal culture, and other activities and resources in the Upper Great Lakes region. Educational material in this module is presented in the form of documents that can be downloaded and links to resources for more information. The second module focuses on climate change impacts on forest defoliators, bark beetles, and forest pathogens. Research on each of these topics is presented, along with adaptations and management strategies where applicable. Educational material in the second module is presented in short videos on each topic, with links to resources for more information.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the impacts of climate change on natural resources and forestry in the Great Lakes region.
- Identify the impacts of climate change on tribal culture in Northern Wisconsin.
- Identify the impacts of climate change on forest health, forest insects, and forest pathogens in the Great Lakes region.
- Identify management strategies for dealing with climate change and forest health issues.

3.0 Society of American Foresters (SAF) Cat. 1 CFEs
6.0 Wisconsin DNR Cooperating Forester CEUs
To obtain credit you will need to complete the training within 30 days of registering and receive 75% or higher on all assessments. A list of individuals who successfully complete the training will be submitted to WI-DNR and SAF on the first of each month.

Professor of Forestry, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Holly Petrillo is a Professor of Forestry at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. On the UWSP campus and in many Midwest communities, Holly teaches courses, workshops, and training related to forest health, entomology, and pathology. Holly’s professional interests are related to disturbance impacts in forests, including insects, diseases, and invasive organisms, and also how climate change impacts forest ecosystems.
