All county forest tours are free and open to the public. Age requirements vary by event, so please check individual listings. Registration is required for all tours.
NORTHWEST | Bayfield County

Northern Bayfield County Forestry and Recreation Tour

Washburn | Oct. 21 | 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The Northern Bayfield County Forestry tour will highlight the co-existence of County Forest management practices and community outdoor recreation opportunities. Participants will visit an active timber sale, tree planting sites, natural regeneration sites, and a County Conservation Park (Siskiwit Falls).

Registration is required. 9th grade students through adults are welcome. Dress for the unpredictable weather in Northern Wisconsin. Closed-toe shoes are required.

NORTHEAST | Oneida County

Hemlock Road Red Pine Forestry Tour

Lake Tomahawk | Oct. 21 | 1-3 p.m.

Tour participants will examine red pine plantations and see examples of a recently planted site, an older stand scheduled for harvest, and a thinned plantation. Forest managers will discuss how timber sales are planned, scheduled, established, and implemented, as well as any follow-up practices after the harvest. Discussion will also include managing for forest products along with other objectives like wildlife habitat and recreational uses.

Registration is required. Adults are welcome. Limit of 10 vehicles due to parking. Dress for the weather! Closed-toe shoes and pants are recommended.

CENTRAL | Marathon County

Balancing Timber Harvesting and Recreation at Nine Mile Forest

Wausau | Oct. 21 | 10-11:30 a.m.

This tour will require participants to walk on level/rolling trails with moderate difficulty of up to one mile. The tour will include examples of different harvesting methods including, pine, oak and hardwoods along intensive use recreation trails and what decisions forest managers make to ensure harvesting and recreation can co-exist. Attendees should plan to meet at the Nine Mile Forest Chalet Parking Lot, 221700 Red Bud Road, Wausau, WI 54401.

Registration is required. This tour is open to adults ages 18 and up. Dress for the unpredictable weather. Hiking shoes/closed-toe shoes and long pants are required.

CENTRAL | Portage County

Emmons Creek Fishery Area Forestry Tour

Waupaca | Oct. 21 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Come learn more about the WI DNR’s Emmons Creek Road North Timber Sale. Tour participants will visit a pre-harvest timber sale site. A DNR Forester will lead the tour and discuss the timber sale process, why we need a timber harvest, invasive species, silviculture, and what the end results post-harvest will be. Attendees should plan to meet at the Ice Age Trail parking lot (GPS Coordinates: 44.30472° N, 89.23421° W) Emmons Creek Road, Waupaca, WI 54981. Tour will be led by Forester Jeffrey Nyquist.

Registration is required. Tours are open to adults ages 18 and older, hiking shoes/boots and long pants are required, dress for the weather, no open-toed shoes. Tours limited to 20 participants. Tour is weather-dependent.

SOUTH | Columbia County

Dekorra Public Hunting Grounds Forestry Tour

Town of Dekorra | Oct. 21 | 10-11:30 a.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources invites you to explore The Silent Owl Timber Sale. Tour participants will visit a pre-harvest timber sale site. A DNR Forester will lead the tour and discuss the timber sale process, why we need a timber harvest, invasive species, silviculture, and what the end results post-harvest will be. Attendees should plan to meet at DNR parking lot (GPS Coordinates: 43.43793° N, 89.49229° W) CTH-V Poynette, WI 53901. Tour will be led by Forester Drew McComb.

Registration is required. Tours are open to adults ages 18 and older, hiking shoes/boots and long pants are required, dress for the weather, no open-toed shoes. Tours limited to 20 participants. Tour is weather-dependent.

SOUTH | Juneau County

Forest Management at Buckhorn Wildlife Area Tour

Necedah | Oct. 21 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Tour participants will visit “The Flush Sale,” a post-harvest clear-cut timber sale site. A DNR Forester will lead the tour and discuss the timber sale process, why we need a timber harvest, invasive species, silviculture, the ecological goals, oak and pine regeneration, and forest management goals. Attendees should plan to meet at the gravel parking lot (GPS Coordinates: 43°57’03.8″N -90°00’57.3″W), on the west side of 19th ave., between Zunker Dr. and Sawyer Rd. Tour will be led by Forester Corbin Czyscon.

Registration is required. Tours are open to adults ages 18 and older, hiking shoes/boots and long pants are required, dress for the weather, no open-toed shoes. Tours limited to 20 participants. Tour is weather-dependent.
