Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to teach you how to calculate the energy consumption of various appliances around your home or school. It is intended for anyone interested in learning about energy consumption of appliances, including the energy they consume when they’re turned off.

Steps

  1. Print out a copy of the Appliance Survey (Microsoft Word version or PDF version).
  2. Start by doing a light count and calculating the watts used in one room.
  3. Follow the directions on the survey to calculate watts for various appliances and lighting devices. See the Wattages of Small- and Medium-Sized Electrical Appliances and Equipment Found in Homes and Schools chart for more information.
  4. Look for appliances that are leaking electricity.
