Tennis balls. Bowling balls. Gym socks. Tennis rackets. Car wax. Cellphones. What do these have in common? Would you believe that they are all products of nanotechnology?

The high-tech field of nanotechnology is everywhere, yet many people never see it. According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers, and there are one billion nanometers in a meter.

"To put that in perspective, a human hair is about 50,000 to 100,000 nanometers in diameter and your fingernails grow about one nanometer every second," said Mid-State Technical College Instructor Richard Breen.

A select group of high school students have the opportunity to explore this nearly invisible form of technology this summer. Breen is teaming up with four professors from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to introduce a four-day Nano Camp beginning June 29 at Mid-State Technical College's Wisconsin Rapids campus.
