UW-Stevens Point meeting needs of students, employers

Holding a locomotive piston or seeing a working diesel engine is way cooler than a not-so-interactive PowerPoint presentation.

At least one instructor at Fox Valley Technical College has ditched the screen in favor of a truck rebuilt to haul tools, diagnostic equipment and complete pieces of cars, trucks and trains for both mobile training and recruitment...

...Colleges of all types are in the midst of tweaking the programs they offer — and the ways they deliver education — to meet not only the needs of the state’s and nation’s employers, but also the wishes of students, many of whom have asked for more flexible learning avenues with an emphasis on skill-based learning.

“What we’re trying to do is put a premium on the educational experiences we know will have an impact,” said Greg Summers, University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point‘s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Things like internships … if a student gets some sort of practical experience working with a business and applying the skills as they study, those students do much better in terms of finding employment and earning an income after graduation.”
