Alexander Reeder led his University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point ROTC group on a 5 a.m. ruck march Monday along the Tomorrow River Trail.

Reeder was a natural-born leader, ideally suited to his role as a military commander in training, and one of the strongest ROTC — Reserve Officers’ Training Corps — students in the group, his leaders said.

How that career would have progressed never will be known. Reeder, 21, of Wisconsin Rapids and Katherine Axlen, 20, of Mukwonago were killed Monday when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a minivan that turned in front of them on Highway 66 in rural Portage County. Both were seniors at UWSP.
