Amid cuts, UW System campuses seek to preserve student advising

While state budget cuts make make it more difficult for some students in the University of Wisconsin System to get the help they need to choose the right classes and stay on track for graduation, administrators say they are trying to protect advising and even expland it...

(At) UW-Stevens Point ... As a result of a slightly smaller budget cut and three staff members taking voluntary buyouts, the department was not eliminated. Nine staff remain in a new blended unit of Career Services and Academic Advising.

The budget discussions occurred at the same time campus leaders advocated for, and students approved, differential tuition at UW-Stevens Point — an extra tuition surcharge for a specific purpose.
The additional money at UW-Stevens Point will help fund a new model of academic advising and additional instructors for high-demand courses, according to Greg Summers, provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs.
